The musical: Grieving Aaron
By Larry Hirschorn
This musical enacts my arc of grief from the moment my wife Marla and I learn of my son Aaron’s death in a boating accident to a moment of reconciliation when memories are enough to remind us of the miracle of his existence. Each of the characters in the musical, Karine, Aaron’s widow, Marla, Daniel, our other son, Jennie, my daughter-in-law, and all my grandchildren played an essential role in the journey of my play Grieving Aaron. Writing this musical was my way of grieving Aaron’s death, struggling to master the trauma it created, honoring my love for Aaron and inviting my loved ones, friends and family into the circle of remembering, mourning, and reconciling.
Death has the final word but not the only answer.
I hope that this musical will help parents who have lost their children make sense of, and metabolize, both their grief and their yearning. It is my fondest wish that the musical will connect them to the widest community of parents who have learned that the price of a great love is sometimes a great loss. Through this learning, I, they, we, can recognize that we are not alone.
The musical was performed once for family and friends on April 29, 2022, the day before Aaron’s 44th birthday, at The Venice Island Theater in Philadelphia.
