Jessica Lee Haynie worked as a massage therapist and Reiki Practitioner at the Canyon Ranch Spa in the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. At age 24 she was expecting her 1st child, due Aug. 27th, 2002. This was an exciting time, and her life was filled with the love of friends and family.
Aug. 3rd Jessica began experiencing flu-like symptoms. Aug. 5th she developed a fever, and was hospitalized the next day. Once stabilized, she was sent home, only to return 2 days later. Aug. 9th her baby, Drew, was born via emergency C-section. Jess did hold Drew, and even snuck into the nursery to see her little miracle. The next day Jess was placed in ICU as her conditioned worsened.
Drew was released into the care of her grandmother, with Jessica's blessings. The next day (unbeknownst to her) she was given a 50-50 chance of survival. The time was nearing for her to be placed on life support, so her mother brought Drew to her and allowed many of her friends and family in to see her. Jess thought everyone was there to celebrate Drew's birth, and while she was told not to speak, to conserve her energy, that was impossible. Jess loved to connect with her friends and family, and just had to know how everyone else was doing.
Jess and her mom spent her last conscious moments praying, doing Reiki, forgiving, releasing, and saying, "I love you!", three words Jess shared with everyone, every day.
Once on life support, Jess was unconscious. With healing music playing, her room was filled with pictures, cards, crystals and healing gifts from all faiths, including Buddhist, Native American, Kabala, Christian, Mormon, Spiritualist and others.
Drew developed a fever and was hospitalized. Aug. 19th Drew's life support was removed, and she passed in the arms of Jess's mother, her grandmother. Jess never regained consciousness, and on Aug. 25th she passed, surrounded by family and friends.
Jessica and Drew both died from herpes. Her boyfriend knew he had herpes, and did not disclose it to her. The JADHA (Jessica And Drew Haynie Awareness) Foundation was established in their memory, with the purpose of increasing awareness of the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly herpes. Jess's love of life and love of children is the heart of the JADHA Foundation.
Jessica's father, Don Haynie Jr., had died Aug. 29th, 1985 when Jess was 7. She mourned him most of her life. Butterflies became her favorite icon and her home was filled with butterflies and fairies. Drew's room was hand-painted by a local artist, with butterflies, fireflies, caterpillars and flowers.
While Jess and Drew are not buried at the site of her father, the Haynie Family Stone was designed to reflect her butterfly passion and the continuing connection with her father.
